Nomination Composable Bracelet System Materials Mechanism & Sizing Guide
This is a supporting guide to our main Nomination Jewellery Guide. It focuses specifically on how the Composable link-by-link bracelet system works, including verified sizing, materials, link compatibility, the warranty implications of third-party components, and regulatory compliance.
1 | What the Composable System Is
The Nomination Composable bracelet is a modular system built from individual stainless steel links connected by an internal spring mechanism. Each link can be added, removed, or repositioned without tools.
Nomination introduced the Composable format in 1987. The system was designed in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, and each decorated link is still handmade in Italy by Florentine artisans. The brand holds a registered trademark on the Composable® name and the link mechanism is described in official documentation as “patented.”
How It Works
The bracelet sits flat against the wrist with no clasp. Links interlock using a hook-and-aperture connection held under spring tension. To add or remove a link, stretch the bracelet laterally, slide the link in or out, then release.
Hidden Mechanism
Nomination describes the mechanism as an “ingenious spring mechanism hidden inside each Link.” When tension is released, the spring pulls links together and the connection becomes invisible.
2 | Link Sizes & Compatibility
Nomination produces Composable links in two current sizes: Classic and Big. These are not interchangeable. A Classic link cannot be inserted into a Big bracelet, and vice versa.
| Link Size | Height | Approx. Width |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | 0.8 cm | ~1 cm |
| Big | 1.2 cm | ~1 cm |
Important Compatibility Notes
- Nomination's FAQ also references two historical sizes — Tiny and Smarty — but these are not widely stocked
- Nomination states that “only one size of Composable Link is widely available: CLASSIC”
- Composable links are not compatible with Trendsetter collection bracelets
3 | Classic vs Big: Which Should You Choose?
The choice between Classic and Big is permanent for any given bracelet. Once you start building on one size, every link you add must match it.
Classic (Recommended)
The standard format accounting for the vast majority of decorated links. Broader catalogue, more availability from UK retailers. If buying as a gift without knowing the recipient's preference, Classic is the safer option.
Big
Sits taller on the wrist at 1.2cm vs 0.8cm for Classic. Bolder, more prominent profile. Smaller decorated link selection and less commonly stocked. The decision is aesthetic, not structural, but irreversible within a single bracelet.
4 | Bracelet Sizing
Composable bracelets are sized by the total number of links in the chain, not by a fixed clasp length. Nomination publishes five standard sizing tiers.
| Size Name | Length | Link Count |
|---|---|---|
| Junior | 13 cm | 15 links |
| Small | 15 cm | 17 links |
| Medium | 17 cm | 19 links |
| Large | 19 cm | 21 links |
| Max | 21 cm | 23 links |
When decorated links replace plain base links, the overall bracelet length remains the same. Each decorated link occupies the same physical space as the base link it replaces.
Nomination's Sizing Advice
“If you are undecided between two sizes, we recommend you choose the larger. This way if the bracelet is too big then you can simply remove one of the links to make it the perfect size.”
5 | Materials & Construction
The Composable system pairs a stainless steel structural base with decorative elements in precious metals.
Stainless Steel Base
Certified AISI 304/316L — austenitic grades that are non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, and hypoallergenic. Nomination confirms it “does not tarnish and is hypoallergenic.”
18K Yellow Gold (750)
Handmade in Italy for letters, symbols, and decorative motifs. Applied to the stainless steel substrate in the Florentine goldsmith tradition.
PVD Coating
Physical Vapor Deposition for coloured finishes. Material is vaporised and deposited atom by atom in a vacuum chamber. PVD items are excluded from warranty in cases of improper use.
Enamel & Stones
Hand-painted enamel that is water-resistant but can be damaged by abrasives. Stone settings include CZ, precious stones, semi-precious stones, and natural diamonds.
6 | Why Third-Party Links Void the System
Nomination's warranty explicitly excludes the spring mechanism if non-Nomination components have been assembled or attached to the Composable bracelet. This is not a commercial restriction — it reflects the engineering reality of a precision modular system.
The Engineering Risk
- Dimensional fit: the mechanism relies on consistent fit between link, hook, and spring. Third-party links may have different hook profiles, aperture depths, or thickness
- Material composition: Nomination certifies AISI 304/316L steel with REACH compliance. Third-party links using different alloys may not meet the same nickel release standards
- Consequence: inserting even one third-party link voids the mechanism warranty on the entire bracelet, not just the affected link
7 | Regulatory Compliance
Nomination's official guarantee documentation confirms compliance with two specific European regulations:
REACH Regulation (CE) N. 1907/2006
Governs the registration, evaluation, and authorisation of chemicals, including restrictions on nickel release from jewellery in skin contact.
Regulation (UE) N. 494/2011
Restricts the use of cadmium in jewellery. Nomination confirms compliance across all materials used in their products.
All Nomination products carry a 24-month legal guarantee against defects in conformity, in accordance with Italian legislative decree 206/2005.

8 | Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix Classic and Big links?
No. Classic and Big links are not interchangeable. Once you start building on one size, every link must match. Classic is the standard format with the broadest decorated link catalogue.
Does the bracelet get longer when I add decorated links?
No. Each decorated link occupies the same physical space as the plain base link it replaces. The overall bracelet length remains the same regardless of how many links are personalised.
What steel grade does Nomination use?
Nomination certifies its stainless steel as AISI 304/316L — austenitic grades that are non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, and hypoallergenic. All materials comply with EU REACH and cadmium regulations.
Will third-party links damage my bracelet?
Third-party links may have different dimensional tolerances that affect the spring mechanism. More importantly, Nomination's warranty explicitly voids the mechanism coverage if any non-Nomination component is fitted — affecting the entire bracelet, not just the third-party link.
