Ring sizing

Ring Sizes Explained

How ring sizing works in the UK -- the A-Z letter scale -- and how it relates to the diameter of your finger.

What it is

UK ring sizes use a letter scale, from about A (smallest) up through the alphabet (and half sizes) to around Z and beyond. Each letter relates to a specific inside diameter and circumference of the band.

Why it matters

A well-fitting ring slides over the knuckle with a little resistance and sits comfortably without spinning or pinching. The right size depends on the finger, the time of day and even the weather.

Good to know

Wider bands feel tighter than thin ones, so a chunky ring often needs a half size up. Browse rings and measure first using the guide below.

Choose this ifChoose a size measured when your hands are warm and settled, and allow a half size up for a wide band, which always fits tighter than a thin one.

UK Ring Size Chart & Conversions

What the UK letters mean in millimetres, and how they convert to US and European number sizes.

What it is

A ring size chart pairs each UK letter with an inside circumference in millimetres and the equivalent US and European sizes. For example, a UK L is roughly a US 5.75 and around 51.5 mm circumference.

Why it matters

Brands and overseas sellers use different scales, so a conversion chart stops you ordering the wrong size. Always match the millimetre circumference, which is the true measurement.

Good to know

If you have a ring that fits, measuring its inside diameter is the most reliable way to find the size -- see the home methods below and our ring sizing guide.

Resizing & Getting the Fit Right

What can and cannot be resized, and how to judge a good fit -- knuckles, width and the seasons.

What it is

Many plain metal rings can be sized up or down a little by a jeweller; rings with stones all the way round (full eternity bands) or certain materials are harder or impossible to resize.

Getting the fit right

Aim for a ring that passes the knuckle with gentle resistance and does not spin freely. Fingers swell in heat and late in the day, so measure when warm and settled for an everyday fit.

Good to know

If you are buying a gift and unsure, a popular size or an adjustable style is a safe bet -- and we can advise. See the buying guide.

Chain & bracelet lengths

Necklace & Chain Lengths

From choker to opera -- what each necklace length looks like and where it sits.

What it is

Necklaces are measured in inches or centimetres. As a rough guide: 14-16in is a choker, 16-18in sits at the collarbone (the most popular), 20-24in falls on the chest, and longer 'opera' lengths drape below.

Why it matters

Length changes the whole look and how a pendant hangs. A 16-18in chain suits most pendants and necklines; longer chains layer well and flatter over knitwear.

In our range

Many of our necklaces and pendant necklaces offer adjustable lengths -- ideal if you are between sizes. Layering is covered in the styling hub.

Choose this ifChoose a 16-18in necklace as a versatile all-rounder that suits most pendants and necklines; go longer for layering and wearing over knitwear.

Bracelet Lengths & Fit

How bracelets are sized, how much ease to allow, and how to get a comfortable drape.

What it is

Bracelets are measured by their total length, usually 7-8in for women and 8-9in for men. The right size is your wrist measurement plus a little ease so it moves but does not slide off.

Getting the fit right

Allow roughly half an inch to an inch over your bare wrist measurement for a comfortable fit; add more for a loose, draping look. Charm and link bracelets can often be adjusted by adding or removing links.

In our range

Our bracelets and charm bracelets come in a range of lengths -- measure your wrist first using the method below.

Choose this ifChoose your wrist measurement plus about half an inch to an inch of ease for a comfortable everyday bracelet -- more if you like a loose, draping fit.

Bangle Sizing

Bangles are sized by the hand, not the wrist -- how to measure so it slips on but stays put.

What it is

Unlike a clasped bracelet, a solid bangle must pass over the widest part of your hand, so it is sized by hand circumference. Common sizes are small, medium and large, each with an internal diameter.

Getting the fit right

Tuck your thumb to your little finger and measure around the widest part of your hand; match that to the bangle's internal circumference. Too small will not pass the hand; too large will slip off.

Weight & dimensions

Carat Weight

What 'carat' means for a stone's weight -- and why it is not the same as karat for gold.

What it is

Carat (ct) is the unit of weight for gemstones: one carat equals 0.2 grams. A larger carat weight means a heavier -- and usually larger -- stone, though cut and shape affect how big it looks.

Carat vs karat

Do not confuse carat (stone weight) with karat (gold purity, as in 9ct or 18ct). They sound alike but measure completely different things -- gold purity is explained in our precious metals hub.

Good to know

Two stones of equal carat weight can look different sizes depending on how they are cut, so face-up size matters as much as the number.

Choose this ifChoose by face-up size as well as carat number -- a well-cut stone can look larger than its weight suggests, giving you more presence for the budget.

Gauge & Wire Thickness

How chain and earring-wire thickness is described -- and what it means for strength and feel.

What it is

Gauge describes the thickness of wire or chain. Confusingly, a higher gauge number means a thinner wire. It affects how delicate or substantial a chain feels and how strong it is.

Why it matters

A thicker (lower-gauge) chain is sturdier and more visible; a finer (higher-gauge) chain is delicate and discreet. For a heavy pendant, choose a chain with enough substance to carry it.

Good to know

Earring posts also have a gauge -- standard pierced-ear posts suit most people. Comfort and security both depend on getting this right.

Earring Dimensions

Drop, diameter and weight -- the measurements that decide how earrings look and feel.

What it is

Earrings are described by drop (how far they hang), diameter (for hoops and studs) and weight. A 30mm drop sits at the jaw; a 40mm hoop is a bold mid-size; weight affects all-day comfort.

Why it matters

Bigger is not always better -- heavier earrings can tug on the lobe over a long day. Matching size and weight to the occasion keeps them flattering and comfortable.

From everyday studs to statement hoops, our earrings list their key dimensions to help you choose.

Measuring at home

How to Measure a Ring at Home

Two simple, accurate ways to find a ring size with things you already have.

What it is

You can find a ring size at home either by measuring the inside diameter of a ring that already fits, or by wrapping a strip of paper or string around the finger and measuring the length, then matching to a chart.

How to do it

For the best result, measure a well-fitting ring's inside diameter in millimetres and match it to a size chart. Our step-by-step how to size a ring at home guide walks through both methods.

Good to know

Measure when your hands are warm and at room temperature, and check a couple of times. Avoid measuring cold or first thing, when fingers can be smaller.

Measuring Your Wrist & Neck

Quick home methods for bracelet, bangle and necklace sizing so gifts and treats fit first time.

What it is

For a bracelet, wrap a tape or strip of paper snugly around your bare wrist and add a little ease. For a bangle, measure around the widest part of your hand. For a necklace, measure an existing chain that hangs where you like.

How to do it

Use a soft tape measure if you have one, or mark a strip of paper and measure it against a ruler. Write the number down in both inches and centimetres so you can match any chart.

Good to know

When in doubt, adjustable necklaces and bracelets take the guesswork out of gifting -- see the buying guide for gift-sizing tips.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my ring size at home?

Measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits in millimetres and match it to a size chart, or wrap paper around your finger and measure the length. Our ring sizing guide covers both, step by step. Measure when your hands are warm.

What is the most popular necklace length?

A 16-18 inch necklace is the most popular, sitting around the collarbone and suiting most pendants and necklines. Longer 20-24 inch chains fall on the chest and layer well, while 14-16 inch is a choker length.

How do I measure my wrist for a bracelet?

Wrap a soft tape measure or strip of paper snugly around your bare wrist, then add roughly half an inch to an inch of ease for comfort. Charm and link bracelets can often be adjusted by adding or removing links.

What is the difference between carat and karat?

Carat (ct) measures a gemstone's weight -- one carat is 0.2 grams. Karat (or 'ct' for gold in the UK) measures gold purity, as in 9ct or 18ct. They sound the same but measure completely different things; gold purity is explained in our precious metals hub.

How is a bangle sized?

A solid bangle is sized by the circumference of your hand, not your wrist, because it has to pass over the widest part of the hand. Tuck your thumb to your little finger, measure around the widest point, and match that to the bangle's internal circumference.

Can any ring be resized?

Many plain metal rings can be sized up or down a little, but full eternity rings set with stones all the way round, and certain materials, are difficult or impossible to resize. If you are unsure, ask before buying -- see our buying guide.

How do I convert UK ring sizes to US or European?

Use a conversion chart that matches each UK letter to its millimetre circumference and the equivalent US and European number. Always match by the millimetre measurement, which is the true size, rather than assuming letters and numbers line up.

Why does my ring feel tighter some days?

Fingers naturally swell in warm weather, after exercise, late in the day and with salty food, and shrink when cold. For an everyday fit, measure when your hands are warm and settled, and choose a size that passes the knuckle with gentle resistance.

What does gauge mean for a chain?

Gauge describes wire or chain thickness, and a higher gauge number means a thinner wire. A lower-gauge chain is thicker and sturdier; a higher-gauge chain is finer and more delicate. Match a heavier pendant to a chain with enough substance to carry it.

What length should a man's chain be?

Men's chains are commonly 20-24 inches, with 20-22 inches a popular everyday length that sits at or just below the collarbone. Bracelets for men are usually 8-9 inches. The right length depends on build and how you like it to sit.

How heavy should earrings be for all-day wear?

For comfort, lighter earrings are kinder to the lobe over a full day; heavier statement pieces are best for occasions. Consider both the drop and the weight, and a secure fitting such as a lever or screw back for larger earrings -- see our construction hub.
