UNOde50 Care & Structural Limits Guide

Tarnish Chemistry | Cleaning Methods | Leather Care | Resizing Constraint

This is a supporting guide to our UNOde50 Brand Guide.

This guide covers the care requirements and structural constraints unique to UNOde50’s multi-layer plated jewellery — tarnish chemistry, cleaning methods, leather and crystal maintenance, storage, and why certain modifications are physically impossible.

Tarnish: What It Is

Tarnishing on silver-plated pieces is a chemical reaction between the silver surface and atmospheric sulfur compounds — not a manufacturing defect or plating failure. UNOde50’s 15–20 micron plating sustains multiple cleaning cycles over years without exposing underlying layers.

Cleaning Guide

Recommended

Dry buffing with a soft silver polishing cloth. Safest approach for maintaining multi-layer plating structure.

Avoid: Liquid Dips

Formulated for solid sterling silver — acids can penetrate pores and react with copper underplating, causing irreversible discolouration.

Avoid: Abrasives

Toothpaste and baking soda physically remove silver from the surface. On plated pieces, every abrasive cleaning reduces the finite 15–20 micron layer.

Avoid: Ultrasonic

Not suitable for pieces with leather, crystals, glass beads, or adhesive-set elements. Vibrations loosen manually mounted components.

Leather Care

  • Avoid contact with perfumes and lotions — alcohol breaks down leather’s natural oils
  • Never submerge in water — causes swelling, distortion, and texture loss
  • Condition sparingly with unscented moisturising cream or saddle soap
  • Store away from humidity and direct sunlight

Crystal & Glass Elements

  • Avoid impact — glass and crystal are brittle
  • Clean with dry or barely damp soft cloth only
  • Check manually mounted settings periodically for looseness

The Resizing Constraint

UNOde50 Rings Cannot Be Resized

  • This is a structural constraint, not a service limitation
  • Soldering temperatures are incompatible with the composite plated structure
  • Mechanical deformation risks cracking or separating the plated finish
  • Applies to ALL UNOde50 rings regardless of design or collection
  • Accurate sizing before purchase is essential

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my UNOde50 silver tarnish?

Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction between the silver plating and atmospheric sulfur compounds. It is not a defect. UNOde50’s 15–20 micron plating resists tarnishing longer than standard fashion jewellery.

Can I use silver cleaning dip on UNOde50?

No. Liquid silver dips are formulated for solid sterling silver. On plated jewellery, the acidic solution can react with underlying copper layers, causing irreversible discolouration. Use a dry silver polishing cloth instead.

Can UNOde50 rings be resized?

No. The multi-layer plating structure cannot survive the heat or mechanical force required for resizing. This applies to all UNOde50 rings. Visit OD’s Jewellers for free professional ring sizing before purchase.
