VW Watches Authentication Guide

Orb Logo Verification | Caseback Engravings | Movement Checks | Reference Numbers

This is a supporting guide to our main Vivienne Westwood Watches Brand Guide. It focuses specifically on how to assess the authenticity of Vivienne Westwood watches — covering external markers, movement verification, reference number conventions, and packaging indicators.

1 | Why Watch Authentication Differs from Jewellery

A watch has a named, identifiable movement inside it with published specifications. If the movement does not match what the dial claims, the watch is not genuine. This internal audit is the most definitive authentication method — and the most difficult element for counterfeiters to replicate.

2 | The Orb Logo

The Orb is the primary external marker — and the most common point of failure in counterfeit production.

Counterfeit Indicators

  • Misalignment: Noticeable misalignment or inconsistent placement relative to dial layout
  • Soft or blurred edges: Genuine Orbs have defined borders — counterfeits often show fuzzy detail
  • Incorrect proportions: Scale relative to dial should be consistent with same collection

3 | Caseback Engravings

Authentic watches feature engravings that are deep, sharp, and uniformly spaced using industrial laser engraving or high-pressure stamping.

Genuine Characteristics

Deep, crisp lettering. Consistent font and spacing. Complete information: reference number, water resistance, case material, and movement origin.

Counterfeit Red Flags

Shallow or soft-edged lettering (acid etching). Inconsistent spacing or font. Missing or incomplete information.

4 | Crown Signing

The crown may be signed with the Orb logo or feature specific textures. On counterfeits, the crown is frequently plain, unsigned, or carries a poorly cast logo lacking original definition.

5 | Reference Number Conventions

Most modern references use a "VV" prefix format — for example, VV208 for the Wallace series or VV006 for the Orb Heart series. These identify the model, not the individual unit.

Authentication Check

A reference number that does not follow the VV format, or cannot be matched to a known collection, is an authentication concern.

6 | Movement Verification

The most definitive authentication method requires caseback removal by a qualified watchmaker.

Key Checks

  • Calibre matching: If the dial states "Swiss Movement," the mechanism should be a branded Ronda calibre
  • Movement branding: Genuine Miyota and Ronda movements carry manufacturer's name on the movement plate
  • Counterfeits typically contain unmarked or generically branded calibres

Movement verification can be performed during a routine battery service at OD's Jewellers.

7 | Weight & Material Feel

Vivienne Westwood watches use stainless steel construction. A watch that feels unusually light compared to other steel watches of similar size warrants closer inspection. This is subjective but contributes to the overall authentication picture.

8 | Packaging & Documentation

Genuine Packaging

Branded presentation box. FSC-certified printed materials. Two-year warranty documentation with space for retailer stamping.

Limitation

Missing documentation does not automatically indicate a counterfeit — secondary market sellers may have discarded packaging. However, the manufacturer's warranty cannot be validated without it.
