Why This Hub Exists

At OD's Jewellers, perfect fit matters. Whether you're buying for yourself or gifting to someone special, understanding jewellery sizing removes guesswork and ensures confident purchases.

This hub compiles universal sizing principles that apply across all our brands—from engagement rings to charm bracelets, from necklace lengths to watch case diameters. While each brand has specific recommendations (linked throughout), the principles here form the foundation of proper jewellery sizing.

Visit us at 41 Barrow Street, St Helens for complimentary professional sizing—we'll measure accurately and explain how different brands fit differently.

Ring Sizing

Understanding Ring Sizes

Ring sizes measure the internal circumference or diameter of a ring. The UK uses alphabetical sizing (A–Z), while other regions use numerical systems.

All sizing information is provided as a retail reference. Only an Assay Office can legally confirm metal purity or hallmark compliance.

Key principle: Ring size varies by:

  • Finger width and knuckle size
  • Time of day (fingers swell in heat, shrink in cold)
  • Dominant vs. non-dominant hand (dominant hand fingers are typically ½ size larger)
  • Pregnancy, weight changes, or medical conditions

How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Method 1: String or Paper Method

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or string (approximately 10cm long).
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger (where the ring will sit).
  3. Mark where the paper/string overlaps with a pen.
  4. Measure the marked length in millimetres with a ruler.
  5. Compare this measurement to the Circumference (mm) column in the chart above.
  6. If between sizes, always round UP for comfort.
Important tips:
  • Measure at the end of the day when fingers are warmest
  • Measure 3–4 times to ensure accuracy
  • Account for knuckle size—ring must slide over knuckle comfortably

Method 2: Existing Ring Method

  1. Find a ring that fits the intended finger perfectly.
  2. Place it on a flat surface.
  3. Measure the internal diameter (inside edge to inside edge) in millimetres.
  4. Compare to the Diameter (mm) column in the chart above.
Caution: This method only works if:
  • The existing ring fits properly (not too tight or loose)
  • You measure the internal diameter accurately
  • The ring band is standard width (wide bands require larger sizes)

Method 3: Professional Sizing (Most Accurate)

Visit OD's Jewellers for complimentary professional sizing:

  • We use professional ring sizers (precise metal gauges)
  • We measure multiple times to ensure accuracy
  • We account for knuckle size and finger shape
  • We explain how different ring widths affect sizing
  • We record your measurements for future purchases

Why professional sizing matters:

  • Home measurements can be inaccurate by 1–2 sizes
  • Prevents costly returns or resizing fees
  • Ensures gift purchases fit perfectly first time

Ring Sizing Guidelines

Average Women's Sizes

Most common: UK L–N (US 6–7)

Range: UK J–Q (US 5–8.5)

Average Men's Sizes

Most common: UK T–V (US 10–11)

Range: UK R–Z (US 9–13)

Children's Sizes

Typical: UK F–J (US 3–5)

Note: Measure professionally—children's fingers grow quickly

Wide vs. Narrow Bands

  • Narrow bands (2–4mm): Order your true size
  • Medium bands (5–7mm): Consider going up ½ size for comfort
  • Wide bands (8mm+): Consider going up ½–1 full size

Why? Wide bands have more contact with your finger, requiring more space to slide over knuckles comfortably.

Ring Resizing Considerations

Can be resized:

  • Plain metal bands (gold, silver, platinum)
  • Rings with stones on top half only
  • Rings without intricate detailing around entire band

Cannot be resized:

  • Eternity rings (stones encircle entire band)
  • Multi-layer plated rings (damages plating)
  • Rings with enamel or decorative work around entire band
  • Titanium, tungsten, or other non-traditional metals

For plated or stretch-style designs, professional resizing is not recommended as it compromises finish integrity.

Brand-specific notes:
  • UNOde50: Cannot resize due to 15–20 micron multi-layer plating
  • Diamonfire: Cannot resize due to triple precious metal plating
  • Nomination: Adjustable open-style rings available
  • Kit Heath: Standard UK sizes, professional resizing available at OD's

Bracelet Sizing

Understanding Bracelet Fit

Bracelet sizing depends on:

  • Wrist circumference
  • Desired fit (snug, comfortable, or loose)
  • Bracelet style (bangle, chain, cuff)
  • Clasp type and adjustability

How to Measure Wrist Circumference

  1. Use a flexible measuring tape or string.
  2. Wrap around your wrist at the widest point (just below the wrist bone).
  3. Mark where it meets or note the measurement.
  4. If using string, measure against a ruler in centimetres.
  5. Do not pull tight—measure comfortably, as you'd wear a bracelet.

Bracelet Size Chart (Universal)

Wrist Circumference (cm) Wrist Circumference (inches) Bracelet Length Needed
14–15 cm 5.5–6" Extra Small: 16–17 cm (6.5")
15–16 cm 6–6.5" Small: 17–18 cm (7")
16–17 cm 6.5–7" Medium: 18–19 cm (7.5")
17–18 cm 7–7.5" Large: 19–20 cm (8")
18–19 cm 7.5–8" Extra Large: 20–21 cm (8.5")

Formula: Wrist measurement + 1.5–2.5 cm for comfortable fit

Fit Preferences

Snug Fit (Wrist + 1.5 cm)

  • Bracelet sits close to wrist
  • Minimal movement

Best for: delicate chains, tennis bracelets, fitness trackers

Comfortable Fit (Wrist + 2 cm)

  • Standard fit for most bracelets
  • Slight movement, comfortable all day

Best for: everyday wear, charm bracelets, link bracelets

Loose Fit (Wrist + 2.5–3 cm)

  • Drapes freely, slides up/down arm
  • Fashion-forward, statement look

Best for: bangles, cuffs, stacked bracelets

Bangle Sizing (Rigid Bracelets)

Bangles slip over the hand, so sizing differs from chain bracelets:

  1. Bring thumb and pinky finger together (as if making a "duck mouth").
  2. Measure the widest point across your hand (knuckles).
  3. Choose bangle with internal diameter slightly larger than this measurement.

Tip: If your knuckles are notably wider than your wrist, size up one step to pass over the hand comfortably.

Bangle Size Chart:

Hand Width (cm) Bangle Size Fit
6.5–7 cm Small Snug
7–7.5 cm Medium Standard
7.5–8 cm Large Comfortable
8+ cm Extra Large Loose

Stainless steel, silver, and plating alloys are generally skin-safe, but individual sensitivities can occur.

Brand-Specific Bracelet Sizing

Nomination Composable®:

  • Fully adjustable—add or remove links
  • Formula: Wrist (cm) + 2 links (snug) or + 3 links (comfortable)
  • Average women's: 18 links
  • Children: 13–15 links
  • Men: 20–22 links

ChloBo:

  • Standard: 18 cm (women), 20 cm (men), 15 cm (children)
  • Made-to-measure alterations available (adult only)

Thomas Sabo Charm Club:

Coeur de Lion:

  • Standard sizing: Small (15–17 cm), Medium (17–19 cm), Large (19–21 cm)
  • Most designs include 3cm extension chain

Necklace Sizing

Understanding Necklace Lengths

Necklace length dramatically affects style and wearability. The same pendant looks completely different at 16" vs. 24".

Key factors:

  • Neck circumference
  • Body proportions
  • Neckline of clothing
  • Pendant size and weight
  • Personal style preference

Standard Necklace Length Guide (Women)

Length Name Placement Best For
14–16" (35–40cm) Choker Sits at base of neck High necklines, petite frames, delicate pendants
18" (45cm) Princess Falls at collarbone Most versatile length, suits most necklines and body types
20–22" (50–55cm) Matinee Falls below collarbone to bust Low necklines, business wear, layering
24–30" (60–75cm) Opera Falls to bust or below Evening wear, dramatic statements, layering
30–36" (75–90cm) Rope Falls to waist Can be doubled, knotted, or worn long for dramatic effect

Most popular: 18" (45cm) Princess length—flatters most body types and works with most necklines.

Standard Necklace Length Guide (Men)

Length Placement Best For
18" (45cm) Base of neck Slim builds, fitted clothing
20" (50cm) At collarbone Most common, average builds
22" (55cm) Below collarbone Larger builds, casual wear
24" (60cm) Mid-chest Relaxed fit, layering

How to Choose Necklace Length

Consider your height:

  • Petite (under 5'4"): 14–18" looks proportional
  • Average (5'4"–5'7"): 18–22" most flattering
  • Tall (over 5'7"): 20–24"+ creates balance

Consider neckline:

  • Crew/high neck: 18–20" sits outside neckline
  • V-neck: 18–22" follows V-shape
  • Scoop neck: 16–20" complements curve
  • Strapless/off-shoulder: 14–16" choker or 20"+ statement

Consider pendant size:

  • Small/delicate: 16–18" shorter lengths
  • Medium: 18–20" standard
  • Large/statement: 20–24"+ longer lengths prevent overwhelming

Layering Necklaces

The Rule of Three: Layer necklaces in increments of 2–4 inches for distinct, visible separation.

Classic combinations:

  • 16" + 18" + 20"
  • 16" + 20" + 24"
  • 18" + 22" + 26"

Layering tips:

  • Mix textures (fine chain + chunky chain + pendant)
  • Vary pendant sizes
  • Keep to 2–3 necklaces max (more looks cluttered)
  • Consider dedicated layering necklaces with built-in spacers

Brand-Specific Necklace Sizing

Kit Heath:

  • Standard: 18" (45cm) with 2" extender
  • Adjustable slider chains available

Coeur de Lion:

  • Choker: 40cm | Princess: 43–45cm | Long: 60–100cm
  • Most include extension chains

Laura Ashley:

  • Choker: 35–40cm | Mid: 40–45cm | Pendant: 45–50cm | Long: 60cm+

Nomination:

  • Women's versatile: 45–54cm
  • Long layering: 60–84cm
  • Men's standard: 48–52cm

Watch Sizing

Understanding Watch Case Size

Watch sizing involves two measurements:

  1. Case diameter (mm)—how wide the watch face is
  2. Wrist circumference (cm/inches)—your wrist size

Key principle:

The right case size depends on wrist size, personal style, and watch purpose (dress vs. sport).

Watch Case Size Guidelines

Men's Watches

Wrist Circumference Small Case (36–40mm) Medium Case (40–44mm) Large Case (44–48mm)
14–16 cm (5.5–6.5") Perfect ⚠️ Large Too large
16–18 cm (6.5–7") Elegant Perfect ⚠️ Large
18–20 cm (7–8") ⚠️ Small Perfect Statement
20+ cm (8"+) Too small Versatile Perfect

Most popular: 40–42mm (versatile, suits most wrist sizes)

Women's Watches

Wrist Circumference Small Case (26–32mm) Medium Case (32–36mm) Large Case (36–40mm)
13–15 cm (5–6") Perfect ⚠️ Large Too large
15–17 cm (6–6.5") Delicate Perfect ⚠️ Large
17–19 cm (6.5–7.5") ⚠️ Small Perfect Statement
19+ cm (7.5"+) Too small Versatile Perfect

Most popular: 32–36mm (elegant proportions, classic sizing)

The Lug-to-Lug Test

Beyond case diameter, consider lug-to-lug distance (length of watch from top to bottom):

Rule: Lugs should not extend beyond your wrist width.

  • Measure wrist width (not circumference)—side to side across top of wrist
  • Compare to watch's lug-to-lug measurement
  • If lugs overhang, watch will look too large and feel uncomfortable

For small wrists (<16cm), aim for lug-to-lug ≤ 47mm for comfort.

Watch Strap/Bracelet Sizing

Typical lug widths:

  • Women: 12–18mm
  • Men: 18–24mm

Typical strap lengths (two-piece, excluding buckle):

  • Women: ~105/65mm
  • Men: ~120/75mm (varies by brand and wrist)

Note: OEM and integrated bracelets vary significantly; always verify lug width, strap length, and hole spacing against the specific model.

Bracelet adjustments:

  • Link removal/addition for perfect fit
  • Micro-adjustments on clasps (fine-tuning)
  • Extension clasps for wrist swelling (hot weather, flights)

At OD's: Complimentary bracelet sizing with every watch purchase—we measure, adjust, and record your link count for future purchases.

We'll size your new watch while you wait—included with every purchase.

FAQs

What if I'm between sizes?

Rings: Always size up—easier to add sizing beads than resize down.

Bracelets: Choose comfortable fit (not too snug).

Watches: Consider proportions—slightly smaller often looks more elegant.

Do fingers swell in hot weather?

Yes—fingers can swell up to ½ size in heat, humidity, or after exercise. They also swell during pregnancy, with certain medications, or after salty meals.

Best practice: Measure at room temperature at end of day.

Can I resize any ring?

Not all rings can be resized—see Ring Resizing Considerations above.

Cannot resize: Eternity rings, multi-plated rings, titanium/tungsten, rings with enamel/stones around entire band.

Visit OD's for professional assessment.

Should I buy a bracelet that fits over my hand or uses a clasp?

Bangles (slip-over): Must fit over widest part of hand—measure hand width, not wrist.

Clasp bracelets: Measure wrist circumference + add for desired fit.

Both styles available at OD's—we'll help you choose.

How do I measure for a watch if I've never worn one?

Visit OD's to try on different case sizes. See how they look on your wrist in person. We'll guide you to proportional sizing for your build.

What's the best necklace length for layering?

Start with 18" as your base. Add 20" and/or 22" for 2–3 layer effect. Keep 2–4" spacing between lengths for distinct visibility.

How tight should a ring be?

  • Should slide over knuckle with slight resistance
  • Should feel secure on finger base (not spinning freely)
  • Should come off with gentle twisting/pulling (not require soap/force)
  • If you need soap to remove it, it's too small.

Can children's jewellery grow with them?

Choose adjustable designs where possible:

  • Nomination charm bracelets: Add links as they grow
  • ChloBo: 15cm fits ages 3+ (no adjustments available)
  • Expect to replace children's jewellery every 1–3 years as they grow
